Our commitment to sustainability
The Rocky Hill Forge Copenhagen forge and workshop is now entirely powered by a modular solar system, which includes a 3.6KW battery charged by a 400W solar panel. Given our shop’s low power requirements, we opted for solar power over a cheaper gas-powered generator. This decision aligns with our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint.
While solar power is an excellent way to minimize environmental impact, ours is not a perfect solution. Our generator required lithium mining and refining in China (a notoriously harmful process) and assembly with plastic, lead, and other environmentally damaging materials.
The generator was then shipped from China to Germany, then to our shop in Copenhagen. Sure, solar power is superior to fossil fuel alternatives, but we believe in transparently acknowledging its limitations.
Transparency and Continuous Improvement
We're open about our process because many companies "greenwash" their brands to appeal to environmentally conscious consumers. This may well be a smart business strategy, in our view it's dishonest.
One of our core principles is sustainability, which led us to adopt solar power. However, we won't obscure the realities of this transition with opacity, or lies of omission.
In our view, over its lifetime, this approach is less negatively environmentally impactful than the alternatives.
We're committed to offsetting our carbon footprint , using solar power for our shop, and actively seeking more environmentally friendly production methods. Through our partnership with Wren, we have offset 46.9 Tons of CO2.
Every company and individual has an environmental impact; the goal is reduction, not elimination. Our packaging is made from 100% recycled materials, our steel is sourced from nearby factories to reduce supply chain emissions, our electricity comes entirely from the sun, and the handles for all our knives come from reclaimed wood.
